My name is Keith Hustings. I am a transplant from Birmingham living here happily with wife Ellen, who I met in Basel, Switzerland. We are the proud parents of three great daughters who have all left the nest and are making their own way in the world.
I was actually born in Warwick, to a mother from London and a father from Sussex.

I have been here in the jolly old States since 1974. I believe the Kansas City area is a good place to live and raise a family, even though we are a long way from mountains or the sea!

I enjoy the ‘beautiful’ game and attend the Kansas City Wizards games when possible. I maintain an inherent weakness for pork pies, Ribena and Crunchie Bars. Thankfully you can now get all of those and much more right here in Leavenworth!

Hello! My name is Evyn. Although I am not from the Isles (I am American), I am engaged to a wonderful man from Scotland.

I met him in 2003 accidental on the internet after getting obsessed with Scotland after seeing none other then Braveheart. I visited him for the first time in 2004. We fell in love when I visited him again in 2005 for 3 months...although he claims he loved me when he first saw me, what a romanticist! I think I did too, but I was also all buzzed and exited about travelling on my own for the first time, and leaving the USA for the first time as well so I don't think my head was in the right place. haha

Trouble came when I tried to visit him again in 2006, we decided we wanted to live in Scotland together, so I decided a good long 6 month visit would be appropriate before such a big decision. I was led to believe a visitors visa was needed for a visit that long, WRONG - but I didn't know so I applied for one. Never got to talk to the IO, my mum did that but I guess she explained why I applied, they said it wasn't needed, so they refunded my money and I bought my ticket and flew to Scotland. However, unknown to us, the visa was recorded as a DENIED visa....so I was pulled aside at Glasgow Airport, questioned, and denied entry. It certainly didn't help I mentioned a boyfriend in the country, and in my bag we're my notes of my dreams of moving to Scotland someday. I was allowed a week under compassionate circumstances, and that week was the last time I ever saw Scotland with my own eyes. I did try to apply for a visitors visa when I returned to the USA but it was denied, they said I couldn't prove a change of circumstances.

It was a sad event, my Fiance had planned to propose to me on Hogmanay (2006)....of course I didn't know that, but he was dropping loads of hints at wanting to propose and I was very exited to see if he would on that visit that never happened. On Hogmanay, sense my family doesn't do anything, I got to watch his family all gathered to celebrate on a webcam, and they could see me on my webcam. We also had microphones to hear each other. My Fiance proposed to me in front of his whole family...and although I dreamt of an engagement in person...it was beautiful in it's own way and I wouldn't change it.

I tried to visit my Fiance for the upcoming Burns Night (2007), especially sense we had just gotten engaged. I was denied entry again at Heathrow, didn't even get to Scotland. They we're not satisfied I was genuinely visiting, no change of circumstances, and not enough money to fund my visit. Heartbroken...I bought my Fiance a plane ticket to visit me for Valentines Day (2007). It was a lovely visit...and having him was more important to me then Scotland. When my Fiance returned he was busy trying to make something of himself. He needed to find a good job, and a place of his own. Sense I couldn't visit him, he visited me again for the following Valentines Day (2008).

I haven't seen him in-person sense...I tried to visit Scotland in February 2009, sense it had been 2 years sense I last tried. I was denied again, same reasons. No change of circumstances, not convinced I was a genuine visitor...apparently a visitors visa is a requirement once you are flagged.

And so, as of writing this my Fiance is trying to get some time off work so we can get married here in the USA. He has a great job now, and a nice flat of his own. He's working hard and saving all the money he can, as am I. Although ive had trouble visiting the UK, we both would still like to settle down in Scotland, it's been our dream for a very long time. We hope if we can find the right help, we can make this dream come true. We hope we don't have to resort to him moving here (USA), although we would take that option if it became impossible for me to settle in Scotland because being together is more important then Scotland.

Although many well-meaning friends and family are encouraging my Fiance to move to the USA, they simply cannot understand the hard work we have both put into moving to Scotland these past years and to throw all that away and to turn our plans upside down is not that easy, nor is it a decision to be made lightly. My Fiance has worked very hard to make something of himself so we can live in Scotland, and ive been on the edge of my seat ready to give up the USA any time, selling my belongings and everything. We love each other deeply, this love has endured all these years of hardship for us. And while we don't want to spend another second apart, we agreed we both see our future in Scotland and we are willing to make this sacrifice of time apart to make the dream come true for the long run for both of us.

And so, while we work hard trying to make this dream come true, all I do is work and spend time on my computer missing my Fiance, and missing the wee life I was able to enjoy in Scotland (mostly, my 3 month long 2005 visit, good memories). It can be difficult, when you try to talk about the things you miss and they either don't get it, or more often you spend more time explaining it then talking about it! So I am thrilled to have the opportunity to meet local people from Scotland and the beautiful isles, and to just have a good banter and a sip of Irn Bru. I felt more at home across then pond then I ever have here, so in many ways, I feel the same homesickness an expat does....unusual huh?
